Self-Directed Learning
Self-directed learning is a process in which the learner takes control of their learning. A good definition of self-directed learning is “when individuals take the initiative, with or without help of others, in diagnosing their learning needs, formulating learning goals, identifying human and material resources for learning, choosing and implementing appropriate learning strategies, and evaluating those learning outcomes” (Merriam pg. 63, 2014). The fire service offers a need for self directed learning. There are down times during a firefighters day where he or she can reflect on their own skill set and humbly recognize their shortcomings. By visiting websites and other resource materials that promotes and fosters self-directed learning firemen will be able to improve in areas they feel weak.
